"Moriarty is afoot," pronounced Professor Dillan as he stepped through the office door at Ig Goode's detective agency. He explained that he and a group of colleagues had come across a modern version of Professor Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes' brilliant arch-villain.Dillan retains Ig on behalf of a group of insurance companies interested in stemming their losses. Ig, from his base in Louisville, must pursue the case in a variety of cities; including Baltimore, Cincinnati, Nashville, St. Louis, and Columbus. He discovers that he is in pursuit of an extremely clever criminal. With his wife, Clare, and his priest brother, Francis, as confidants, Ig closes in and forces the criminal and his cohorts to abandon their operation. Before fleeing, one shoots Dillan in revenge for his role in breaking up their enterprise. The assailant escapes, but Clare suggests that he may have 'gone to ground'. Ig knows that the assailant was reared on an old family farm straddling the American-Canadian border. Ig and Francis take a fishing trip to the border area to see if he is there. Ig spots the disguised assailant only because of something linking him to one of his hobbies.Unfortunately, the assailant is spooked and uses his personal airplane to escape to a second refuge around Berea, Kentucky. Now accompanied by F.B.I. agents, Ig rents a corporate jet and gets to Berea in time to spot the fleeing plane as it lands. As the F.B.I. moves in on the hideout, Ig spots his quarry; again in disguise.Ig isn't fooled!
