Nationwide, there were an estimated 1,382,012 violent crimes and 9,767,915 property crimes in 2008. The number of violent crimes in declined for the second year in a row. Property crimes also declined in 2008, marking the sixth straight year these offenses dropped below the previous year's total.

Nearly 90 percent of the estimated number of violent crimes in the United States occurred in MSAs, 5.7 percent occurred in cities outside MSAs, and 4.5 percent occurred in nonmetropolitan counties.

By community type, the violent crime rates were estimated at 489.0 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants in MSAs, 392.0 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants in cities outside MSAs, and 205.1 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants in nonmetropolitan counties.
