Mitchell Caine, besides being a talented writer is evidently a doctor and historian. The medical terms used in the novel are in-depth surgical things and the historic content of the romance, pre-Civil War era, mainly antebellum (1850's) is very insightful. Paul Abbot was orphaned at two years old, the sole survivor of a wagon massacre in the MidWest by Indians. He was taken into custody by a frontier doctor and grew up in his footsteps, practicing primitive frontier medicine. But eventually, Paul yearns for more and studies at Edinburgh, Scotland to receive a prestigious certificate of surgery. Nevertheless, he is unjustly accused of a crime he did not commit and becomes a fugitive. Returning to New Orleans, he befriends a beautiful, unmarried Creole young woman, Syl Beauvais, and her personal secretary, Fern Veneble. Fern is secretly an abolitionist, as well as an incredibly liberated woman for her time. Her seductive charms take a hold on Paul, but she does not manage to convert him into an anti-slave abolitionist. Paul thinks that Syl, a Southern belle, sophisticated, prejudiced and wealthy is the woman for him and offers matrimony. But into his life steps Micaela, the mistress of a man whose life he had once saved, Jacquard, who is abusive and villainous. Micaela ends up being Paul Abbot's true love, and she is there for him even after his marriage to Syl ends in tragedy. The sequel "Worship The Wind" is also out of print but available through Zshops. It follows the adventures of Paul and Micaela and Jacquard, who vows revenge against Paul and is determined to have Micaela back. Creole Surgeon is a highly entertaining, provocative, erotic and engrossing tale and should melt any woman's heart. It melted mine, eventhough I'm only 12 years old.

Caine has written a novel, calling on historic elements, romanticism and graphic portrayal of physical relationships. A young English doctor is sent to the US during the Civil War, where his life changes forever. Here he meets a passionate and uninhibited salon dancer and a wealthy unmarried woman of society. Both women influence his life and career. We are in the rural South, where duels and danger is rampant. Where there are skeletons in the closet and the hidden affairs of men and women are put aside beneath the glamor of their lifestyle. It is a novel worth reading if you are into the historic romance/genre and love steamy love scenes. Look for its sequel!
