I was first introduced to the writings of Walter Brueggemann when I took Intorduction to the Old Testament with Rickie Dale Moore at the Church of God Theological Seminary in Cleveland, Tennessee. This was used as a text book for that class and I have been a Walter Brueggemann fan ever since. He is simply the most dynamic and insightful theologian I have ever read. You will not get bogged down with quotations from a million sources when reading Brueggemann. He simply engages the text and takes the reader with him. This book deals with educating our children in the things of God. An example he uses is when Joshua and the children of Israel crossed the Jordan and when they got to the other side God had them to set up a pile of 12 rocks as a reminder of how He had brought them across the Jordan. "When your children ask what do these stones mean?" Brueggemann shows how children were educated by things like stones stacked one on top of the other. In Israel they were careful to set up memorials so that the kids became part of the story of God too. In this way the testimony about how God delivers lives on in the children generation after generation and does not die out. I recommend this book to all pastors, theologians, and anyone intersted in Christian education.
