Not your plain ol' painting book

According to her introduction, the author's intention is to bring out the "inner artist" in the person without an art background. Exploring the possibilities and achieving happy accidents is the focus of creativity. She created a book with fun ideas and easy techniques for the beginning scrapbooker who has never painted as well as more experienced scrapbookers who are looking for interesting ideas to try. She introduces and encourages you to play with several types of paints that are safe to use in scrapbooking and decide which kind suits your style best. The first chapter covers some basic tools for scrapbooking, painting, as well as painting surfaces. What I like on these pages are the large color pictures with numbered supplies neatly laid out rather than being placed in a jumbled "artistic" way. This makes it much easier to match with the numbered list next to each photo. This is a good thing since the lists, although they are in pretty lavender and teal colors, are fairly light and may be harder to read in some lighting conditions. Another nice thing is the amount of white space on these pages which makes them easier to read. Remaining chapters give a type of supply (i.e., acrylic paint) and some techniques to try with them, like dry brushing, scumbling (a new one for me), glazed transparency, waxed and stamped backgrounds, etc. Each technique is shown on two facing pages and includes a large sample of a scrapbooking page using her personal photos. An overview of the supplies and techniques is at the top of the page and at the bottom of the page a small detailed supplies list, including the vendor. On the facing page she makes some comments and observations about the technique. There are also photos of 3 stages of the technique with brief numbered explanations below. Then there are sections for Tips & Tricks and Other Ideas to Try. Again, the pages are nicely laid out with visual separation of each part and enough white space to make it readable and interesting. I like the idea of having just two facing pages for each technique. I can leave the book open to refer to without having to turn pages while I have ink or paint on my fingers, since I'm a messy type of crafter. There are things I have seen in craft stores that I haven't been interested in purchasing because I had only a vague idea about what to do with them. (i.e. "Short Cuts Enamel Paint) or how to make them look interesting (layering stone and webbing textures). The book ends with a source guide and helpful quick reference index. It isn't an extremely detailed book, but covers a lot of ground in its 95 pages, letting you decide what you would like to explore further. I'm happy to add this to my personal library.

Great Reference Book - Easy to Follow (from Tangle Foot)

I wasn't expecting much when I got this book. Ho-hum....another book full of impossible tricks. Boy, was I wrong. This was a great book to read and follow. I'm buzzing with ideas and excited to incorporate some of the great ideas!!
