After seventeen years as joint owner of a twenty-five-room hotel with her husband in Cornwall, Sue finds herself single once more. Alone, boat sitting on a worn-out old catamaran anchored in the harbour of Seychelles Yacht Club.

Although ignorant of any sailing knowledge she offers her cooking experience to crew, along with four others, on a 42ft yacht to sail over one thousand five hundred nautical miles from Seychelles to South Africa.

After enduring three frightening nights being pitched and tossed on a towering swell left by the tail end of a cyclone, the small party drop anchor off the tiny island of Desroches. It, too, had suffered from the storm, which had wreaked havoc on the newly opened twenty-room Island Lodge.

Sue learns that the general manager has resigned and they are looking to fill the post after the renovations are completed. With nothing to lose, she offers her CV to the resort manager. It is the idyllic tropical paradise surrounded by the warm turquoise water of the Indian Ocean lapping at fine, soft, pale cream beaches. Docile, lumbering giant tortoises, towering coconut palms and a thick forest of casuarina pines. What could go wrong?

Between the many amusing and comical antics of the staff, all is not calm and serene. Incidents occur, some with disastrous endings and Sue discovers managing a hotel on a remote tropical island is poles apart from the one she left in Cornwall.
