Jessica recalled her aunt sitting at the table in the kitchen with two friends on the morning that the news made the front page of The Oakley Express. The women had been reading the story, and all had confessed their inability to fathom the horror which 'the Hunt boy' must have felt upon making his dreadful discovery.

But she had understood. Even at ten years old, she had known the horror he had felt because she had already experienced that anguish four months before.

She knew that the tragedy of losing his mother had been Christian's reason for leaving Oakley, but she realized then that it had also been the reason he had chosen not to return until after his father's death. He had not swept back into Oakley to claim his inheritance, as several had suggested. He had found his way back home after the source of his agony was no more, after the man whose betrayal had ripped apart his entire world was gone.

He had always seemed to be enjoying his life, hopping from country to country, a wealthy and privileged brat living the sweet life on his daddy's bankroll without a care in the world.
