Craven County was formed from Craven Precinct which was formed in 1705 from Bath County and in 1712 by name change from Archdale Precinct. The following counties were formed from Craven: Carteret in 1722, New Hanover in 1729, Johnston in 1746, part of Dobbs in 1764, Jones in 1778, part of Pitt in 1787, Pamlico in 1872.
