My heart was in my throat throughout!

A MUST read! Excellent! What a versatile writer! Pirrung's stories are fresh, exciting and "sit on the edge of your seat" thrilling! Her books are a wonderful mix of mystery, suspense, romance and philosophy that are written in luscious terminology that touch the senses. I've read three of her books so far and am amazed at how unique each is; not one is a "formula" read and each is distinctively different from the other two. Enlightening, humorous, deeply provocative, heart-wrenching, and charming, as well as intense. I thoroughly enjoyed CRACKED HEARTS! It's an entertaining read, with wonderful characters, humor, and enough suspense to make you not want to put it down till the end. It was an AMAZING story! After reading EXPLOSION IN PARIS, I couldn't resist collecting all this author had to offer. I'm so glad I bought this one. As all her books, this one touched a spot in my heart and mind. This wonderful book is told in a voice that will tug at your heart, and a plot that will keep your enthusiasm engaged until the last page. Yes, the plot is grave, but she manages to weave enough wit and warmth into this story to make it a thoroughly uplifting read. I absolutely adored this book, and have placed LM Pirrung at the top of my list of favorite contemporary writers. As someone who has read a huge number of books, classics and otherwise, I found this one a breath of fresh air. The story is brilliantly paced and you never find yourself bored while reading. The setting is so real and evocative and the characters so authentic I felt like I was living it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery. I look forward to more books by this author. This one is full of intensely different personalities, some characters are achingly loveable, others are deliciously eccentric then there are some over-the-top "strange". This is a frightening narrative which describes the impossibility of living without the diligent and thoughtful, protective care of parents or guardians, where both danger and evil are allowed in, a world of emotional collapse and the determined efforts of young people to survive through a relentless attempt to maintain vital connection. The failure of family as a whole, suffused with a sense of shame and helplessness, endurance of a coarse, abusive father are at the core to provide an eerily subtle residue of foreboding to permeate the storyline. It's a story of the underlying terror of a murderer, and at the same time a story of freedom, a multi-layered book that more than delivers on all levels. Between comforting households and quirky characters in their endless efforts to bring some sense of stability to their lives, there is a heightening sensitivity and awareness that the neighborhood is no longer safe. A great romance/suspense novel. Awesome twist at the end that you do not see coming! This author spends a lot of time on detail and the reader is better off for it. Book was given to me by a friend and I could not put it down...read it in a day and a half. Great find!!

UNPREDICTABLE! INTRIGUING!

I can't remember when I was affected by a book this much! The author lays open the frailties of the "over-the top" characters so lovingly that you're inclined to almost accept their human failings. The novels greatest strength lies in it's well-researched, beautifully detailed portrait of an extraordinary cast of multi faceted, flawed characters whose intersecting lives emerge, though scarred, from personal traumas. Amazingly touching! Incredibly suspenseful! Compelling, to say the least! A remarkable portrayal of the power of love to triumph over difficult circumstances! EXPERIENCE IT!!

SURVIVAL OF THE SOUL

Pirrung holds nothing back in painting a stark picture of dysfunction in this testament to resilience of the human spirit with its unwavering hope. You'll identify closely with the suffering of some of the characters. The consequences shape their world for the rest of their lives. Having greatly enjoyed reading her first novel, I Will Wait For You, I looked forward to her second effort with great anitcipation and I wasn't disappointed. The intricate plot twists and turns to keep you entranced and turning those pages. Powerful! Emotionally Wrenching! LOVED IT!
