After the teacher handed the graded tests out, I was afraid of turning the stapled pages over to see the inevitable. Even though she didn't speak, I heard her sneer, "Daisy, I am disappointed in you." I stared at the blankness of the back page visualizing an F on the front. Struggling in algebra was nothing new for me, but I had to get a B to pass the class or I would be in this lovely school again during the hot summer months. I barely maintained a passing grade since Christmas. If I didn't get a B or higher, my summer was ruined. Taking a deep breath, I slowly turned the pages over. My eyes first focused on the all the red lines and checkmarks then they focused flatly on the large red D at the top of the page. My summer had officially been ruined. The kid in front of me Mica Malone, the school jock, the mysterious semi-newcomer who moved here as a freshman three years ago, the teacher's favorite, slid his graded test paper in his book bag but not before I saw the 'A+ Good Job, Mica!' written in red at the top. Great. Just. Flipping. Great. Can a teenage girl croak from embarrassment? He glanced down at the paper clinched in my hand and I quickly shoved it in my notebook, gritting my teeth. "I'm sorry," he winced realizing my inner conflict about my failing grade. I had stared at the back of Mica's head all year and watched him receive A after A on every assignment. His smile made the girls blush and his ability in football made him the most popular kid in school with students, teachers, coaches, and the town. The fact he was showing me kindness made my heart flutter but his charm would not overcome the fact I received a D. Mom eventually will ask if I received my test back, no doubt. She'll wait until we were around the dinner table and I'd have to say I received a D and would need to take Summer School in front Dad. My dad's frustration was inevitable and I'd have to listen to his speech about the importance of algebra and taking school seriously. I already knew that! When my brother Joe arrived home from college, he'd definitely bellyache about driving me to and from class, and gripe how my bad math skills have ruined his life, well, his summer anyway. They probably pictured me homeless for my future. Why couldn't an asteroid hit the earth, or an episode of the Walking Dead become real life and civilization end? A bit dramatic, yes. Lost in my dreadful thoughts, I saw Mica watching me with pity, again. "What," I asked stiffly. Shaking his head sympathetically he cautiously whispered, "Daisy, it isn't that bad. I mean it isn't the end of the world." I flinched; it was as if he could read my thoughts, "You don't realize, my whole summer is ruined now," I admitted begrudgingly. Mica had ignored me all year and now he wanted to take interest in my bad grade? I was shocked he even knew my name. What was it with him and his fading accent that seemed to come and go?
