A story of family which links two cultures: that of the white Australian settlers and that of the First Australians. But the story is far from complete and to the youngest member of the family, Justin, so much of the past is hidden by a veil of silence. Justin's grandmother was a young Aboriginal woman, Annie, whom the station owner, Max Fielding, had married, flouting the social conventions of his time. Annie had died in childbirth and her daughter, Stella Rose seemed content with the station life and her father's love. Annie 's story was not talked about much. The two Aboriginals who worked for Max also seemed content with the life Max had provided for them.
Only Justin is haunted by a desire to know more about his Aboriginal heritage. He is not in love with life on the station, and dreams of becoming an artist or a writer perhaps. Unsuccessful at high school, except in Art, English and History, he runs away with a friend before graduation night. The boys hitch a ride with a truckie to the Northern Territory and he loses contact with his family.
Where will this journey take him?
