COUNTERSTRIKE When the alien war engulfing a distant planet spilled to Earth through a network of hidden portals, humankind was plunged into an apocalyptic, generations-old conflict between the Plysserians and the Chodrecai. Now, months after Earth's most powerful military forces formed a tenuous alliance with the Plysserians and countered a devastating, three-pronged Chodrecai offensive, alien survivors continue to wreak havoc on a shell-shocked Earth. Martial law and civil unrest run rampant. Resistance cells and pockets of Chodrecai sympathizers are gathering strength. And two U.S. Marines--Sergeant Major Simon DiCarlo and Sergeant Belinda Russell-- remain trapped on the alien planet of Jontashreena. Now, as human and Plysserian scientists and engineers race to unlock the intergalactic portals and harvest alien technology, Earth prepares for the most explosive battle for its existence. Joining the war effort are recruits like young Colin Laney, who will advance from Marine boot camp to the forefront of a massive invasion on alien terrain--with the fate of two worlds hanging in the balance.
Ward's second book of "The Last World War" series is very good. This is solid science fiction where there is a large amount of science, aliens and interstellar war. The story is well written and marches along to the not surprising but good ending.

This is the second book in the series that started with "The Last World War" Overall I can give it 4 stars as a well written military sci-fi book. It proposes a world war on another planet that spills over to Earth after a teleportation gate is invented. One of the two warring parties hopes to use earth as a raw materials depot to replace their depleted home planet. The book is written about how Earth Nations respond to this challenge; not only on the macro governmental level but how the average private in the field reacts. The characters are well written and believable. The actions taken by all parties are believable. And more importantly to me, there is no single point of evil, merely the affect of decades of war on people. I think you will enjoy it. Hopefully this series will continue. The aliens invented the gates for instantaneous military transport on their home planet, It just turned out to have an interstellar range and Earth was accidentally discovered. Therefore, if one planet could be found, There are millions more to find.
