NASA spent 17 years and an estimated $50 billion constructing the Space Launch System (SLS) and its Orion spacecraft in an effort to send men back to the lunar surface for the first time since 1972.With the spaceship fastened at the top, the shiny new SLS rocket is 23 stories tall, surpassing the Statue of Liberty. Orion could be able to travel farther around the moon than any spaceship made for humans has ever done thanks to four car-sized engines and two rocket boosters. That's the direction that NASA's Artemis I SLS mission is taking it.

The SLS rocket, which could lift off as soon as August 29, will put the Orion spacecraft on a course to circle the moon and return to Earth. Since the rocket has never flown before, there are no passengers on board. But if the spacecraft succeeds in its mission, NASA intends to send passengers in the Orion module on another lunar orbit before utilizing SpaceX's Starship to set them down on the moon's surface in 2025.
