The story begins with a fun day with their family. As the story progresses, Cosette and Henri reminisce about "how it used to be". There is a brief section on how terrible life was in the puppy mill, but then the story moves on to the happy day they were rescued We like to call it the "Disney approach" to storytelling - it starts out happy, introduces a conflict, and then proceeds to resolve the conflict with a "happy ever after" ending

Families, schools, and rescues can use this book to teach children about the joy of adopting animals. We designed the book so you can skip the more distressing part of the story. However, we encourage caregivers and teachers to use the book as an opportunity to talk with children about the realities of how dogs are sometimes treated.
