Correlation - Memoirs of an Engineer

is a story resulting from a choice to study Science at school and maintaining this interest throughout a lifetime - always working in science and technology, but frequently changing direction. These were real changes; different countries; different companies; academia; self employment, bringing the family along for better or for worse.

These changes were motivated by a sense of adventure and to keep the sparkle in working life, rather than accept a long plod to comfortable retirement.

Beside making an interesting tale in itself, the story will be useful to anyone choosing a technical career or those advising on careers- students, teachers and parents.

And it records how engineering design has changed over one lifetime. In 1960 all calculations were done by slide rule; it has completely changed to engineering now being done by computer, using engineering software. The author has been part of this development and this has lead to much travel, world-wide, to keep universities up-to-date with this advent of computers in engineering. His final career step being to have his own company involved in the marketing and application of engineering software, and the teaching of its use to professional engineers.

And how the chemical industry has changed over the same period. In 1960 most organics - paints and plastics - originated from coal by converting coal to acetylene in huge electric furnaces. This was suddenly changed to an oil based industry by the advent of cracking naphtha to ethylene around the 1960s. This resulted in an emphasis on process development to find new chemical processes for the new raw material. Together with the development of more plastics, textiles, pharmaceuticals, this made the 1950s to 1990s a significant era for the chemical industry.

Memoirs of an Engineer is a narrative over this time period, of someone whose interests lay in Process Development, the use of computers in Process Development and Engineering, and its teaching.
