Suffering, unrest, and the dire consequences of anger, injustice, and loss, lead to darkness. This, in turn, leads to the death of dreams and is no longer 'out there' but becomes personal. The poet feels fragile 'like delicate shells, ' like something drifting in the storm. Life loses its vision. It becomes a prison, almost like a grave. There seems to be no way out and she decides to embrace the situation, set her eyes on a higher vision, and fight to the end.The poet yearns for a 'kindred spirit' but knows already is not going to be, for she identifies with the loveless and the lonely of the world -and again, that higher vision of the 'golden gate' keeps her going. Whatever good she had is gone, becomes a memory. She's orphaned and she's still going through the night. The poet feels lost in a world that offers no healing or vision, and her attention turns to the One Who holds the World's foundation. Strengthened, she builds her own hope out of her own resources and through that, she sees His hand more clearly, but then He leads her to paths she feels no ready to take. As she struggles to understand, to make sense, she has a tiny vision that illumines her path. The poet starts to see the beauty of life but this brings along sadness, for beauty reminds of the one she lost and will find only at the end of her road. Night becomes a comfort but melancholy craves oblivion. In retrospect, the poet contemplates the disappointment of her dreams and the realization that what remains, is memories and yearnings
