Chapter 1.
BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON
Later that day, my Mother died screaming from the pain. Her screams rebounded off the walls of the enclosed room, echoing in the sterile hospital. Dad and I stood by her hospital bed in the private room, helplessly watching her serene face. She had undergone surgery for cancer that had riddled her body.
It was a false hope in trying to save her life now, but we had to try. In the cramped space crammed with medical machines and devices, the tiny monitor lights flashed briefly, with a mind of their own.
We were lost in our thoughts of her as I turned away from her bed. I moved to the single window, hoping for a glimpse of our pickup truck in the parking lot. Right now, a distraction would be welcomed. I looked up, searching the billowy clouds for her face as they rode along slowly, surrounded by blue skies.
