Great Introduction and reference

I bought this book about two months ago when my company was starting a J2ME project. I read the first 6 chapters page for page as an introduction and then used the rest of the book as a reference. I now consider myself a proficient J2ME programmer. I've used the book mostly as a reference and I have found that the way the chapters are laid out makes it very easy to find whatever information I'm looking for. The chapters on Record Stores are particularly useful. One reviewer said to just read the online docs. CDLC and MIDP are not very difficult technologies to become proficient at but the documentation online will make it much harder on you. If you don't mind wasting hours of time to save [money] on this book thats fine. But if your time is valuable like mine break down and make the investment. This book and the JavaDocs will be all you need to start professional apps in J2ME.

Great book for getting started with J2ME

This is an ideal book - with the right mix of code and explanation. Books with too much theory drown you with diagrams, whereas you want to hit it asap. I liked the explanations, especially with the wealth of code. If one knows Java, then all one needs is to read the code to quickly understand how it works. I especially liked the first few chapters, which enabled me to create my entire app by hand before moving on to a GUI. Bcos I had tried the toolkit before reading the book - I know it looked very complex. However, after getting stuff to work step by step manually from the book made me understand the process completely, and then I was able to appreciate and use the toolkit easily. I found so much useful code - like download pics, http connections, etc.I do hope a second edition focussing on Japanese mobile phones comes out soon.

All you need to get started with J2ME programming!

With keen interest in J2ME programming, I try to read as many J2ME books as possible. Core J2ME is an excellent book for getting started with J2ME programming, and it is the most up-to-date J2ME book on the market now. The author guides you through step by step from how to set up the environment to develop a complete application.This book covers different aspects of J2ME very well, especially, Chapter 11 RMS and Chapter 14 HTTP connection are very detailed.Further more, the author gives a bonus chapter on MIDP for the Palm OS 1.0, which is very informative. This is the only book I found that covers PDA so far.

I don't have a lot of java experience, but the book was easy to understand. The examples were good and the book seems to cover j2me very well.

Core J2ME explains it well!

Whenever I look for Java books, I almost always go with Sun Press. Every book I have ever read in this series has been outstanding, and Core J2ME is no exception. I was very fortunate to have read this book in it's pre-release stage and I was extremely impressed by the books clarity and explainations. The examples are clear and illustrate their points well. For those people just getting into J2ME programming, I would whole-heartedly recommend this book! I will be recommending it to my J2ME students as an excellent foundation to J2ME.
