This book contains the recipes of Gunilla Gunnar Jarl. She collected, perfected and developed recipes over her entire lifetime. The contents of this book are exact copies, in her own handwriting, of recipes from her personal cookbooks. The few recipes that were printed or typewritten are also included. This book is not for beginners. It does not include detailed step-by-step descriptions in the recipes. An experienced cook, however, should be able to follow the recipes and produce delightful meals, especially baked goods which was her speciality. Gunilla Gunnar was born in ?by, Sweden in 1881. She learned her basic skills in the family bakery in ?by. Her mother ran the bakery and provided baked goods for the King and Queen of Sweden when they visited their summer home near ?by. As the oldest child in the family, Gunilla helped her mother in the bakery. Gunilla came to America in 1901 and worked as a maid and cook for a wealthy Chicago family. She taught herself to read and write English and became an American citizen. She continued to cook and hone her culinary skills in Chicago, then married Emil Jarl in 1903 and moved to Osceola, Iowa. In Oaceola she organized and cooked for special events at her church and the Masonic Lodge. She entered her baked goods in the Clarke County, Iowa, Fair and won a number of blue ribbons. In 1915 the family moved to Los Angeles. Gunilla continued to cook for Masonic and Eastern Star events, church activities and occasionally professionally. She did all of the cooking for holidays and family gatherings for her growing family. She entered her baked goods in the Los Angeles County Fair, at Pomona, and continued to win blue ribbons. Gunilla was more than a cook. She was a food artist. One of the notes in her cookbook was "Be an artist at the Gas Range." Try her recipes and you will agree.
