If you can only own one South African cookbook this is it. It has gone through many revisions and this is the English translation of the Afrikaans version. I can not offer an impartial review of South African cooking I'm an Afrikaner and this is my soul food. Regardless of where you are from this book is full of great food. For American cooks not used to metric or measuring by weight this will different than the average American cookbook. If I could only take ten books to a tropical island this would be one of them.
Best cookbook ever

Well, it is hard to make a claim like the one in the review's title, but seriously, if you happen to be able to get a copy of this book, I highly recommend it. It is so popular in South Africa (where it was written) that it even has a wikipedia entry! -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cook_and_Enjoy_It

To put it bluntly, this is the best cookbook you will find. It is easy to follow and is sold in a hard-cover version - obviously the publishers know that people want this book to last for several generations. Do not let its original publication date worry you, yes, the book is 50 years old, but it has had many updates to bring it up to today's standards.

I especially recommend: Chocolate Cake (Quick), it is very very good. Most people who have tasted it couldn't believe such a cake existed - I've even had someone ask me how much it would cost for them to get one like that made for them.

Well, I guess I should stop rambling now... My final note is the following... This book has been used by my family for many years, and I own the latest English version of the book. All I can say is, it is amazing, but perhaps a little traditional, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Unfortunately, the book is not easy to get outside South Africa, but, if you ever happen to see it, I would simply recommend that you get yourself a copy.
