Contribution to the study on the management of protected areas in Guinea

The aim of this study is to identify the different types of pressure exerted by lowland farmers in the Ziama Biosphere Reserve. A structured survey was carried out among lowland farmers to identify the causes of human pressure. Linear transects 1km long were also used to record the types of anthropogenic degradation around the lowlands. The study showed that 0.5 to 2 ha of lowlands are granted to the population, and a head of household is responsible for 1 to 15 people. Then, 8 types of anthropogenic degradation were recorded, of which logging is the most dominant, with 82 plant species destroyed, 44 of which are on the IUCN list. This study constitutes a database for the management of protected areas, which would contribute to the mitigation of pressures on forest ecosystems.
