Contribution to the development of the pomegranate tree

Although pomegranate is traditionally used in the diet of many countries, scientific studies on its health potential are recent. The most used part of the plant is the fruit and especially its rind, but studies on the leaves and flowers are almost rare. The objective of our study is to valorize the non exploitable remains of the pomegranate tree (Punica granatum). The work is structured in four (04) parts: an ethnobotanical study, a botanical study, a phytochemical study followed by an evaluation of the antioxidant activity. We were able to identify and quantify 16 phenolic compounds. These compounds are of different qualitative and quantitative distribution between the 4 drugs. The fruit (peel and juice) is an important source of polyphenols and flavonoids but the qualitative analysis shows that the leaves and flowers are richer in these compounds. All the pomegranate drugs expressed significant antioxidant activity but those of the leaf infusion and flower decoction were the most remarkable and more important than that of ascorbic acid.
