Continuo Player in 24 Steps: Beginners to Advanced According to Italian Lute Sources

This book is dedicated to all lute players who wish to learn how to play the basso continuo on lute/ archlute, theorbo or baroque guitar, from beginners to advanced level. It is a very practical manual in which the 24 steps have been organised by arranging the indications and rules from Italian lute manuscript treatises. Learning the continuo directly from the theoretical precepts of the sources of the period is important both to get to know the way they were played in the past and to learn more about the sources for our instruments. The 24 steps offer a progressive teaching path to learn the positions and fingerings of the main harmonies, their compositional criteria and general rules for harmonic connections while avoiding mistakes. The didactic path will lead from the very first steps (guided by tablature examples for lute/archlute, theorbo and baroque guitar) to the mastery of the main harmonies, divided into 17 types and in all keys. The 24 steps are enriched by historical exercises in (almost) all keys (section III); by summary tables, with tablatures in all keys, of the practised chords (section IV); by another 24 rules for a better harmonisation (section V); and by other historical indications useful to guide oneself in the realisation and in the choices for the accompaniment of the bass (section VI). Adequate indications for organising a daily practice, necessary to train a professional, could not be missing. It starts with harmonised scales and quaver basses, with tablatures in all keys and for all instruments (section VII) supplemented by a series of indications for expanding, perfecting and enhancing both instrumental and mental mastery of this complex and fascinating world (section VIII). Finally, a series of compositions, from the early seventeenth to the eighteenth century, will give the opportunity to try one's hand at musical practice, right from the first rules.
