Contents Under Pressure Like the mysterious Maggie, Contents Under Pressure, is a "MMH." (A Must Have Her!) Following Drew, and her best buddy Stephen, as they investigate high crimes (murder and bank robbery) and misdemeanors (fashion faux paus by Drag Queens in heels that are way too high) is a ride well worth taking. I agree with Willa in her review below, Allison Nichol does a superb job creating characters that I want to have as friends and, in the case of J.J., maybe a little more. The story weaves mystery, comedy, romance, and action into a rich fabric. Aside from the obvious desire to know, "who done it," I found myself wanting to know more about these people, their lives, and their histories. Fortunately, Contents Under Pressure does not leave me wanting, as Ms. Nichol drops delicious nuggets of information throughout the story. I love the repartee between the characters. Contents is chock full of great lines. The kind of lines you'll want to write down and use later on your friends. And, I laughed till I cried every time I met a new DINGO dame. The names! The clothes! The glamour! Look, any writer who can make the reading of an autopsy report engaging, entertaining and, yes even erotic, is damn good. You will love these characters, love the dialog, and love Contents Under Pressure.
A delightful five star ride!

I could not disagree more heartily with the prior review. Contents Under Pressure is a delightful ride filled with humor, pathos, suspense and - I believe - pitch perfect dialogue. As someone who is not an avid mystery reader and who typically reads literary fiction, I found the mystery compelling and not at all difficult to follow. My favorite part of the book is the characters. I particularly enjoyed the wonderful repartee between the two main characters who were childhood friends, as an especially literary flashback into their mutual past filled with compassionate nuns and truncated bullies relates. These partners in law enforcement are so close as adults that they practically finish each others' sentences, and their genuine friendship is sufficiently rich fodder to carry the reader through the story. Several scenes in the book are "laugh out loud" funny, with wildly imaginative touches like "D-I-N-G-O, a wholly invented game of live-action, drag queen BINGO, in which one contestant is more sensational than the last. The romance between one main character, Drew, and her former lover, Maggie, is extremely well expressed, leaving the reader hungry to understand the current state of each character individually, and to wonder about their possible future. The scenes of intimacy are sensuous and compelling. Those who know Provincetown will reminisce through author Allison Nichol's uncanny depiction of the sea side resort and those who have never been will discover a subculture with a vibrance and cast of characters all its own. The author has the rare ability to comment upon human nature from both inside and out with the humor of a comedian and the probing sensitivity of one with genuine love for her characters-even the minor ones. Contents Under Pressure has something for everyone - mystery and suspense, humor and literary prose, and I eagerly await its sequel.
