Contemporary Indian Sculpture: The Madras Metaphor
No Customer Reviews
This book looks at seven sculptors who form a distinctive school in contemporary Indian sculpture. In the major essay the historical tradition of Indian sculpture is recounted, the impact of Western art and ideas is discussed, and the efforts of a group of sculptors to work off the weight of Western ideas are focused upon. The work of this particular group of sculptors is described as an intelligent attempt not just to subvert the hegemony of the Western methodology and tradition on contemporary Indian art but also, and more importantly, to formulate an expanded discourse founded upon the resources latent in traditional Indian thought and sensibility.
