Contemporary Asian America: A Multidisciplinary Reader

Contemporary Asian America is the first volume to integrate a broad range of multi-disciplinary research on the ways in which the intersection of Asian immigration, community development, and socialization affect Asian American communities. It exposes its readers to developments within the discipline, from its inception as part of the ethnic consciousness movement of the 1960s to the more contemporary theoretical and practical issues facing Asian America at the century's end. The volume includes 13 sections, and covers such topics as immigration, economic life, family and community, spiritual practices, gender, sexuality, racism and anti-Asian violence, the new second generation, youth gangs, domestic violence, visual culture, and theory. Contemporary Asian America provides an expansive introduction to the central readings in Asian America and Asian American Studies, presenting a grounded theoretical orientation to the discipline and framing key historical, cultural, economic, and social themes within a social science context. Contributors include Shirley Hune, Dorinne Kondo, Lisa Lowe, Pyong Gap Min, Don Nakanishi, Gary Y. Okihiro, Ruben Rumbaut, and Ronald Takaki, among others.

look no further for a great Asian American Studies reader...

Although there have been a number of readers published in the growing field of Asian American Studies, none approach the subjectmatter with more clarity, depth and understanding than Zhou and Gatewood's _Contemporary Asian America: A Multidisciplinary Reader_. As one who took Asian American Studies courses as a college undergraduate, I appreciate _Contemporary Asian America_ for its commitment to providing historical readings on the birth and development of Asian American Studies, as well as articles on Asian American community formation, new immigrant and refugee populations, Asian American visual culture, multiethnic Asian Americans, and queer Asian America, among many other topics. Not only is the range of subject areas diverse yet focused, but the articles themselves are a wonderful reference guide to illuminating some of the most groundbreaking scholarship in the history and continuing development of the field. As a current graduate student and one who hopes to teach Asian American Studies related courses in the future, I found the study questions, suggested readings and suggested films that accompany each section an especially informative and useful guide to further exploring the wealth of issues presented in this reader. In short, _Contemporary Asian America_ is a useful text for those just discovering the field of Asian American Studies as well as for all levels of undergraduate and graduate students, public educators, and more seasoned college and university professors. This is one reader that no student, professor or library should go without.
