Jump Start is just that.

This book is intended as an introduction to Project Management. It covers all the fundamentals and then some. First, it covers the Revised Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). Naturally, it is not the PMBOK, but it is a complementary view for those getting into the field of project management and related disciplines. There is more to this book than meets the eye. Many of the charts are in a strategic location in the book, and again in the appendices. This book cannot be everything for everyone, but if you look in the index, you may find there is more here than in most introductory books. As a test, the first thing I looked for was risk standard deviation, and it was there under a section on "Three-Point Estimate." The glossary not only has terms used in project management but also common words that are used differently in project management. Such as "Warrant Period" - A period of time when the stakeholders can notify the team of problems and have them corrected immediately. I am a little confused about the description of the Author, as the back cover says that Kim Heldman, PMP, has over ten years of experience in project management. Yet inside it, the book states Kim Heldman is the Chief Information Officer for the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. She has over 14 years of project management experience in the information technology field. True that there are different methods not covered in the book, and also how to integrate the information into different disciplines and coordinate with agencies like the FDA. But those subjects are for a different book. Anyway you look at it, this book serves its purpose and can still be used for years to come as a reference.

Crucial Comrehensive Research

A must read for anyone in the design & construction industries, from student to seasoned professional.

good intro to construction

I like this book! It's a good introduction to the world of construction management. I would suggest this read for prospective students interested in a building construction, architecture, facility design, mechanical or civil engineering degree at the undergraduate or graduate degree level. A lot of the terminology in the book is what is really used in the construction industry. A scope of the industry is provided and the author covers important subjects such as estimating and scheduling - as well as project management and contract administration. She's very thorough and she doesn't pull any punches. She let's you know up front that construction management is a challenging and often difficult career to master. But the author also reminds the reader that it's a rewarding career since the buildings and stuctures created will usually be around long after people involved in it's construction live.

Excellent Reference

This book contains useful information in an accessible, converstional tone. It is a great reference for someone just starting out in the field, or a college student who wants to know what a construction manager's job is all about. Reading this book is like spending a day on the construction site shadowing the author. It offers a good feel for the tasks and responsibilities of a CM.

An absolute must have

This book is essential for all beginning estimators and project managers. It will give you the basic knowledge that you need to survive in the construction industry.

Perfect!

This book is exactly what I have been searching for. I am a newly employed estimator/project manager and was searching for some sort of reference book to help me along. Dr. Jackson does a fabulous job of explaining things from all angles. Her book is easy to read and understand even for a novice such as myself. There are review questions at the end of each chapter as well as a list of terms to know. I find this book extremely valuable.
