Book Overview

Now published by Oxford University Press, Constructing the American Past: A Source Book of a People's History, Eighth Edition, presents an innovative combination of case studies and primary source documents that allow students to discover, analyze, and construct history from the actors' perspective.

Beginning with Christopher Columbus and his interaction with the Spanish crown in 1492, and ending in the Reconstruction-era United States, Constructing the American Past provides eyewitness accounts of historical events, legal documents that helped shape the lives of citizens, and excerpts from diaries that show history through an intimate perspective. The authors expand upon past scholarship and include new material regarding gender, race, and immigration in order to provide a more complete picture of the past.

Great transaction

I received this book alot quicker than I thought I was going to & it was in great condition.

Great choice for American history professors and anyone interested in learning more about American H

I have reviewed many American history-related books for my college classes - textbooks, essay collections, primary source collections. Of all the choices out there, Constructing the American Past is my favorite. Each section begins with an essay that sets the stage for the documents you are going to encounter. Then comes a series of primary documents - brief enough excerpts so that you are not overwhelmed, but long enough to get a well-rounded picture of whatever issue the chapter is address. The documents are followed up with another essay, and finally you are given a few provocative questions to consider. Don't miss the set of documents on the duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr in the Introduction!
