In this hands-on approach to the physics of product design, students apply concepts such as heat transfer, buoyancy, elasticity, or insulation to the development of everyday items. Necessary materials are inexpensive and easy to find.How does your garden grow? Shed some light on the physics supporting plant growth in a controlled physical environment. Greenhouses provide for the differential energy needs of plants during their growth cycle. Students design structures that will convert light to heat during germination, and then reconfigure those structures to promote photosynthesis. By comparing the effects of design characteristics on plant growth, students will not only observe the connections between plant biology and basic principles in thermodynamics and energy transfer but also realize the importance of rational design.
