It's a close encounter of the municipal kind! The aliens have come to earth...and a lot of them live in the Third District, the city's only alien-majority neighborhood. They work, live, shop and sing karaoke here, just like anyone else would. Ashley Perrin, right out of college, has gotten a job as the community liaison for the Third District's city councilman, and is learning very quickly that even if extraterrestrials are ordinary folks, their problems and concerns are, shall we say, pretty unique ones. Her first week will involve parades, sewer systems, con women and a chicken with an eye for trouble. It's more than Ashley expected...but she's ready to help where she can. It's a fast, funny novella from the Hugo-winning author of Redshirts and The Kaiju Preservation Society. Come visit the Third District!
If you like the science fiction that John Scalzi writes, then you are going to really enjoy this quick novella about the absolutely insane first week Ashley Perrin has in her brand new job as community liaison in an area mostly composed of aliens and their idiosyncrasies.
It is funny and I have to really admire Ashley for connecting dots between a missing chicken, exotic pets, complaints about a super loud yearly festival, and sewage system problems, and saving the day in the nick of time! I must say, if she is this quick and effective, the Third District is in very good hands!
Would I love to read more about this district and how Ashley and the rest of the office keep things running smoothly and dealing with complaints in the Third District? Yes, I certainly would! It would be entertaining and light laughing fun. I really enjoyed reading this and I am intrigued how the audiobook would sound. John Scalzi is a great author and I will happily read anything of his!
