This is a collection of stories of a young girl growing up in a large immigrant family on the west side of Chicago around the time of the Great Depression. Many of us would give much to so clearly evoke our own childhood lives, to experience time past among those who loved and nurtured and shaped our paths; those who, sometimes, also misunderstood us. As the young Esther learns moral lessons from her father, her mother, and the diverse community surrounding her, we are reminded of how we, too, have learned to navigate our lives.
