Book Overview

Fear prevents people from learning to swim. Learning to swim is not just about arms and legs. First, it's about the nuts and bolts of full presence of mind. You can't overcome fear or learn to swim if you panic. Learning the nuts and bolts fear and mindfulness is the subject of this book. Once you're peaceful, safe, and happy in water, you can learn basic skills like putting your face in, floating, getting up from a float, all of which are in the book along with numerous other skills. Strokes are not covered: strokes are merely choreography--irrelevant to overcoming fear. This book is a paradigm shift in teaching swimming.

Demystify the learn-to-swim process: it's not what the public thinks Learn how to be comfortable in water all the time: you never have to push yourself Gain complete control in water: it has nothing to do with strokes Become safe, happy, and at ease in water, shallow and deep: learn how the water works

Great Book for a Better Course!

We read/used this book throughout the week-long swimming class that Melon teaches. I have taken the beginning and the next-step class and Melon is amazing. We used many of the lessons that are incorporated into the book. I was one of those people that had reconciled that I was never going to swim. I just wasn't made that way. Melon taught me that it wasn't true. I was in the deep end floating at the end of the first day. I now can enjoy my time with my kids in the water. It is a gift for which I will forever be grateful. If you want to learn to swim, buy this book. Even better, take the course. It is all money well spent. In fact, it is some of the best money I have ever spent.

Great way towards self discovery and ease in water

I tried to learn swimming as a teenager. I was given all the instructions on how to stroke, kick, breathe, etc. But I never managed to "get it" and as a result began to blame myself and became afraid of deep water. I did the half day introductory course and then started working with this book. What the book teaches is very simple, yet extremely profound. By teaching how to be comfortable in water (shallow or deep) and how to go slowly and be present, this book has made an immense difference in my level of ease and in my desire to be in the water. To the person rushing to learn how to swim, this book will be annoying. It will appear to be too slow. That pace is deliberate. And pay close attention to sections that are "apparently" not related to swimming. As much as I am a skeptic of "new age mumbo jumbo", what this book talks about is really the core of the practice of knowing oneself, one's true nature. I have taken the lessons from this book into other areas of life and have been having fun. I hope you too have fun, both in and out of the pool/ocean.

Great Method that Works

There are so many helpful tips and practices in this book to help you get over your fear of water and/or just learn more about swimming with ease and comfort. This is a classic in this field. Melon has developed a method that works to turn you into a confident swimmer. Read the book!

Release the natural born swimmer in yourself!

I recently took a course through the Orca Swim school in the Seattle area. They utilize Melon Dash's methods in their instruction. A little bit about my swimming history, I had an accident in a swimming pool when I was in high school and nearly drowned. I was not afraid of water before that, but since then I've a huge fear of water and just the smell of chlorine will make me relive my high school incident. I was quite skeptical of the methods outlined in this book, but was willing to give it a try. I have gone to conventional swimming classes and they didn't work for me. It was very important to me to learn how to swim because I now have a baby girl and I did not want to pass on my fear of the water to her. Melon emphasizes going slow and being very gentle with yourself. If you let yourself go slow and treat yourself with gentleness, you will find that swimming will come naturally and without thought. A whole new world has been opened to me. Get this book and find instructors who have been trained with this methodoligy. I now have absolute comfort in the water, both the shallow and the deep end. I'm so thankful to Melon (and Orca Swim School) for showing me how much FUN the water is. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

The only gentle way to heal your fear of water

This book is an excellent manual that can be used pool side. It covers from a-z all the steps you can take to heal your fear of water. It worked for me!
