Not so much a history as it is a memoir

Filled with anecdotes from the unfortunate wars fought in the Congo following its independence from Belgium this is a fascinating look at many of the ordinary (and extraordinary!) days spent by mercenaries hired by the various governments there to accomplish goals their own Soldiers were unable to achieve. Hoare was involved in the Katanga episode and fought the Simbas, mobilized a small "navy" to fight on Lake Tanganyika and helped rescue hostages in Stanleyville, all the while meeting various odd characters. An easy read with helpful maps.
