This is the concluding book of the Shangri-la Trilogy. It covers the first year of the marriage of Justin and Djet, as they face the challenge of integrating their very different backgrounds. In this book, Justin's wife, Djet, takes the most prominent part, and the less attractive elements of current Aboriginal society are not shied away from. Yet hope persists despite the problems. The skills of the Aboriginal spirit doctors are further revealed, and the attachment of Aboriginal people to their homelands is keenly felt.
Two characters who have throughout the story been on the periphery, Vincent Kaine and Mike Kells, now, for a brief moment, take centre stage and meet their destiny.
And it is fitting that Peter Fielding, whose arrival at Shangri-la began the whole story, has the final word.
