Community is Unity is the driving force for Fairburg after Fex devastated the world. The families in and around the farming town must live their town's motto if they are to provide for themselves and the people of the nearby city of Abandale.
Mae and Ruth Walker, 16-year-old twins, have grown up on a farm on the outskirts of town. They have a bond that only twins do. Cora, their mother, likes to say they are two sides of the same coin. Ruth is a tom-boy, destined to take over the farm someday; and Mae is a girlie-girl, expected to go to Abandale University.

Everything changes when Mae is selected to go to AU in the middle of their junior year, more than a year early than planned. When Mae stops writing, Ruth is the only one in Fairburg who suspects something is wrong. On campus, Mae learns that all is not as it seems as she struggles to catch up and to fit in with the school's motto, Concord not Discord.
Ruth hopes she is wrong, but her gut is telling her otherwise. She devises a plan to find her sister. Ruth's journey leads her to Breeze, another 16-year-old and member of a landscaping pod in Abandale. Breeze has her own doubts about what is happening in the city. The two girls unite in hopes of discovering answers to their questions. With the help of a few brave souls, they find Mae and uncover a brutal secret that will change the future for everyone.
