Concerning the Spiritual in Art

By: Wassily Kandinsky

Concerning the Spiritual in Art by Wassily Kandinsky is a landmark work of modern art theory in which the artist explores the relationship between artistic expression, emotion, color, form, and spirituality. Kandinsky argues that art can communicate inner experience and that its value extends beyond the imitation of the visible world.

Through discussions of color, composition, artistic necessity, and the role of the artist, Kandinsky examines how different visual elements can affect the inner life of the viewer. He considers the development of modern art and advocates an approach in which artists respond to their inner impulses rather than being limited by conventional representation.

A foundational text in modernist and abstract art theory, Concerning the Spiritual in Art offers an influential exploration of artistic creativity, abstraction, aesthetics, and the spiritual dimensions of visual expression.
