As the hours passed, I began to grow delirious from the pain. I have been told that I said many times to forgive them, for they know not what they do. When it grew late in the afternoon, I knew I would not remain conscious much longer, at least I desperately hoped I would not, but I knew there was one last thing I must do.
One of the Psalms which has always enchanted me, which has always driven me on and given me strength was the one which began "My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me?" It rends the soul with its description of the forsaken anointed one. It truly describes the torment which I experienced, better than I could ever express myself. Yet, even in the depths of his agony, the psalm foresees that the anointed one's faith remains firm and even turns to joy. Even at death's door, he glorifies the Lord in his might and his justice.
I knew I had to recite this psalm.
