Presents data communications and networking from a computer programmer's perspective and will help programmers ''ramp-up'' very quickly to produce data communications and networking software. Based on real world examples, it describes what data communications hardware does, how data communications software works, and what protocols are all about, focusing on what the programmer needs to know to write networking programs. The detailed, comprehensive coverage will also prove valuable to systems analysts in assessing the requirements of particular data communications and networking systems, and to systems engineers in developing a strong software-oriented understanding of data communications and networking technology, and the limitations of implementations.
Recently, I was asked to teach an introduction to computer networking class on short notice. To help prepare, I went back and reread this book. While it is somewhat dated, it still provided me with a quick refresher on the fundamentals of how computers are connected and how they communicate with each other. I was glad that I took the time to read it again and I recommend it for anyone else who needs a quick refresher. The sections that are dated were also of assistance in that they provided some historical perspective on the changes in networking that have taken place in the last fifteen years.
