Digital media have become an integral part of our everyday lives. Computers and the internet are increasingly shaping education, professional development and leisure activities. However, it appears that some people struggle to use them in a controlled and self-determined manner. Children and young people are growing up with the current media landscape and experience it as a natural part of their everyday lives. For many parents, however, dealing with new media raises issues that cause conflicts and put a strain on family life. Counselling centres offer support for excessive use of new media. This book follows the relatives of adolescents as they take part in an information programme at a counselling centre specialising in computer game and internet addiction. The topic is first examined in the context of the family, before turning to the concept of 'understanding social work'. Finally, through an analysis of the information programme, the study highlights how the orientation of support for family members towards their lived environment is of key importance for social work.
