This fourth edition is up-to-date with 1985 ANSI standard coding techniques, conventions and style used throughout. All example programs have been rewritten to utilize the expanded features available in the 85 standard. Chapter 6 (The Evaluate Statement) has been added to discuss a new statement in the 85 standard. Chapters 20 and 21 covering interactive COBOL have been added to take advantage of the increasing use of COBOL on PCs. Certain sections, covering outmoded 74 standard features, have been deleted.
This is actually a very easy book to read, so far. We are still in the beginning, so I'm not sure how hard the latter part of the book is, but it has been informative and easy to follow.
From bottom up, with great examples

I not only have the book but I also took the coarse at the school that the Author teaches at (I didn't get a chance to take it with Prof. Popkin). The book walked me through the steps of learning COBOL with excellent examples. Great for someone who is new to COBOL or is really not into programming, like I am. I even bought the compiler program that you can use on your Windows or DOS PC or laptop which was a great help. Recommended for students and beginners.
