The Complete Resume Guide Review

Surprisingly few potential employees know the proper way to write a resume, which is why The Complete Resume Guide by Marian Faux is the perfect resource for all job hunters. Faux begins the book with an extremely brief history of resumes. She also emphasizes the resume as a selling tool of job seekers to potential employers. From the beginning and throughout the book, the resume is stressed as the most important tactic for getting an interview and eventually a job. Faux also emphasizes truthfulness in resume writing and the work necessary in creating a good resume: thought, preparation, and writing. Faux's book is well designed to take the reader through each step of resume creation. Each of the nine chapters of the book covers an aspect of resume writing, and each chapter is broken down into sections. The first fourth discusses the steps to take when beginning a resume. The middle concentrates on actually writing and improving a resume. This section also includes an entire chapter on special needs resumes such as new graduates joining the job market, older returning workers, and persons with disabilities. Finally, the last part of the book describes the finishing steps in creating a good resume. Most importantly, the actual text is straightforward and simple. Along with guidelines to writing good resumes, Faux also includes over fifty resume samples. The samples illustrate resumes for various jobs as well as demonstrate resumes in different formats. For accessible reference, Faux arranges these examples alphabetically by profession. She uses these sample resumes to illustrate proper formatting and appropriate information found in good resumes for a number of different jobs. She then follows up the examples with step-by-step general instructions for creating a good resume and offers tips for improving a mediocre resume. Faux even sets up the instructions in a workbook format, which is extremely helpful for anyone who has never before created a resume. Job seekers only need to answer a series of questions to organize all the information necessary on a good resume. Also included in this book is a section concerning cover letters. Faux tells her readers that cover letters are almost as important as resumes. She stresses that cover letters are essential in capturing a potential employer's attention. In fact, because cover letters introduce the resume and request an interview, Faux states that not getting an interview is often the result of a poor cover letter. Like for the resume section, this book offers easy to follow guidelines for creating good accompanying cover letters. Although some of the 1991 computer information such as printer preferences is outdated, this book is the essential handbook for all job hunters. From start to finish, the importance of the resume as a selling tool is stressed and illustrated. Because of its the simplicity and thoroughness, The Complete Resume Guide reads like an easy to understand instruction manual. In fac
