Complacency Kills: The Silent Threat to Correctional Officer Safety
The world of correctional work is intense, disciplined, and often unseen by the public. Behind prison walls, officers operate in an environment where a single moment of inattention can cost lives. It's not always the explosive riots or violent outbursts that pose the greatest threat-more often, it's the quiet drift into routine, the false sense of safety, and the moment an officer thinks, "It won't happen here."
That moment is when complacency strikes.
In Complacency Kills, career correctional officer Carey Randall exposes this invisible threat with clarity and urgency. Drawing from over 15 years of boots-on-the-ground experience in high-security housing units, death row, transport teams, and correctional hospitals, Randall explains how complacency takes root in the smallest oversights and grows into a deadly risk.
Through real-life incidents, detailed analysis, and leadership insight, this book delivers:
A clear understanding of how complacency manifests in correctional settings
True stories of preventable tragedies and near-misses
Signs and symptoms that your team is becoming too comfortable
Leadership strategies for building a culture of vigilance
Practical steps to keep yourself and others alert and safe
Whether you're new to the job or a correctional veteran, Complacency Kills is a must-read guide that will challenge your habits, sharpen your focus, and remind you that in this line of work, staying alive depends on staying alert.
