In the Western Judeo-Christian societies, disabilities were seen as the result of 'evil spirits, the devil or witchcraft, or God's displeasure.' Alternatively, the people suffering from disabilities were viewed as a 'suffering Christ' and were often perceived to be of angelic or a status beyond human, a blessing onto others. (Clapton & Fitzgerald) The usage of the term itself has shifted in the previous times. While earlier it was labeled as 'handicap', wherein the focus was on 'access', it has shifted to the individual's ability with the usage of the term 'disabled'.(Devlieger, 1999)
