I intended this instruction manual to cover the many problems I have encountered over the many years of training my dogs and in relation to remedies which I have adapted to use in my techniques to acquire the finished gundog. When speaking or corresponding with the new trainer they seem to feel that their is a secret world or techniques to gundog training. Knowledge and experience do have a great part to play in training. What I hope for the new entrant is I can debunk the issues and supply a method that will through dedication supply a gundog. No book or experience can solve problems in breeding or the pup which is absent of good solid working genes of parents or grand parents. My methods are honed through many years discarding what did not work or was improved on. I will not be at your side when you train but with my exercises and video I can show you I walk the talk. I meet lots of trainers or who aspire to be a trainer that cannot do the same. Each individual must adapt to their own personality and then match it to their dog. I am never in a rush to complete my pup but build on the dog as it develops and in the case of my GSP can take longer. A Hunt Point Retriever breed has a lot to absorb over other breeds and mistakes in introduction to training is one of the greatest problems I see and witness in dogs brought to me for problems. If you introduce training correctly and in an ordered manner many pitfalls can be prevented. The whole aim of the book is to aid in developing gundogs that will give you the pride and satisfaction. It is no secret what planning, time and patience can do. Having said this if you end up with a trained dog you may feel the urge to compete and why not. To this end I supply a guide to competing here in the UK and added advance work to aid you in this quest. When training for competition you have a different mind set and must supply more polish along with more planning on your part to be successful. This part of our hobby can be addictive and take many years to refine. At present I have two Field Trial winners and a Field Trial Champion in my kennel. I set myself a ten year plan to selecting and breeding my own line. You will need the same dedication and planning. I see no reason that anyone cannot train a gundog, I hope through this book more people will and it was for that simple reason I began writing it. I am just a guy who can train and handle dogs and I hope through this book show you can as well.
