When discussing the terminology "colony" you should know it refers to a territory, area, state or country gotten by another country either through conquest, purchase, settlement or cession ... While a protectorate or trust territory on the other hand is a territory whose traditional rulers have by treaty or agreement surrendered a number of their rights of government to a foreign government, even as they keep their encoded rights and ownership of the land.
