My family has farming in the blood. This is story of my youth, growing up on our farm in the 60's and 70's, our big family and a Mum and Dad determined to have us learn our lessons the hard way.
It is about the world of endless possibilities and growing up outdoors, and the struggle that was school, about first dates, teenage angst and being convinced that the smells of the farm were following me around, clinging like a wet blanket.
Sometimes, on warm sunny days, I even thought I could be a farmer. Summer evenings, walking the fields with Dad, were not really what farming was about, most of the time. Dad knew I lacked what he called the 'application'. I had none of his wonderous sixth sense around the animals.
I was just going to have to 'plough my own furrow' which now, I realise, is what Mum and Dad wanted me and my brothers to do from the start.
This is a nostalgic look at coming of age in rural Yorkshire and how I grew up independent and set about getting on in life so I would never have to muck out the pigs again.
