What is this story about? Quite simply, this story is about hope; the hope that every football season brings. But in a more general sense, it is the hope that living within the boundaries of this great nation affords. It is a hope that our founding fathers envisioned. Through hard work, grit, and dedication, a person or team of individuals can rise to the forefront through sharpening their abilities and attain a place in the minds and hearts of people that is not bestowed by birth, but earned through sweat. That is what this book is about; that every man or woman, boy or girl can realize their hope-if they are willing to put in the work.
Twenty plus years ago, I had a choice to make. The calligraphy ink on my college diploma was almost dry. Lucrative job prospects were thin. The large high school in town offered me employment as an assistant football coach. They were perennial playoff contenders. Their coaching staff was seasoned; their fan base: large. The promised experience attractive and my cousin started at defensive end.
A smaller high school on the east side of town also offered me a football coaching opportunity. They had only two winning seasons in 30 years. A handful of people would show up for games. The staff was as green as the Grinch. But the pay was slightly better and my brother was a contributor on the team.
In the end, after a fierce internal fight, I opted for the place I felt most at peace. I chose to pursue the opening at the small school and what happened there in the fall of 2000 is a remarkable story of hope, grit, and brotherhood: a tale worth telling.
