----- Are you watching the news today??...

----- I read Allen Drury's book in the 1970's... I was deeply disturbed by the possibilites then... It is fifty years later, and I have since become a Navy veteran... I NEVER forgot this story... Now, we see it playing out nearly BLOW-for-BLOW over current events in the Ukraine... Maybe a few of you on the extremist liberal, 'green' side of the fence would care to pick up a copy of this... READ it... And then go off with a cheer; giving your highest kudos to the fellow in the White House right now... "Ladies & gentlemen, I present Mr. Joseph Edward Jason Biden - The President of The United States..." Then see if you can recall Santayana...

Overdone, But With Potential Parallels for Today

I agree with the reviewers who found this novel somewhat over the top and cartoonish in its descriptions of certain politicians and media figures. Nonetheless, I am fascinated by the scenario described by Drury, because its earliest stages are paralled by current events! In the novel, a charismatic liberal lightweight, boosted by the mainstream media, is elected President by a wide margin. The American people are tired of endless wars and ideological controversies, and so Governor Edward Jason is chosen to lead the people to a brighter future ... a future of peace and international understanding. Anyone who knows Drury's politics knows that the road to Hell is paved with good (or liberal) intentions, so things don't work out very well. By the end of the novel, our chief enemy of the era, the Soviet Union, has conquered our nation with hardly a shot fired. Let's consider the present. We have just elected, by a wide margin, a charismatic liberal lightweight who has been shamelessly puffed by the mainstream media. Most Americans are tired of endless wars and harsh ideological clashes. Barack Obama is supposed to be our new secular Messiah, leading us to a brighter future ... Uh, oh.

Chilling, and All Too Possible

'Come Ninevah, Come Tyre' ends the Advise and Consent series, which should be required reading in our secondary schools. It shows the fragility of the American republic when subjected to the excesses of extremists, be they on the right or on the left and how easily the media and public can be mislead by charismatic or "righteous" leaders. The lessons herein apply in today's America just as much as they did in 1973--it can happen all too easily, leading us to the wrong places for all of the seeming "right reasons." Drury paints all too well, in almost Orwellian fashion, how "patriotism" in the hands of the ambitious and egotistical can become a dangerous weapon indeed. In addition to being well written and highly enjoyable to read, this seven-book series is classic, timeless and disturbing for those who worry about the future of their nation. author of THE SWAN: Tales of the Sacramento Valley

What COULD have been...

This is a story of what COULD have been, if the Soviet Union and the American Left had had their "kindly" way with humanity.RECOMMENDED!

A very scary and disturbing book.

This book, the fifth installment in Allen Drury's "Advise and Consent" series, details the very brief presidency of Edwin Jason. President Jason, launched into the White House by the efforts of numerous violent groups, is an unwitting pawn in the hands of enemies of the United States -- with tragic results. In this novel, we say "good-bye" to many of the characters we have come to know and love from the previous four novels -- quite a few in a violent fashion. This book is dated -- no question about it -- but the underlying truths expressed by Mr. Drury are still valid -- even if the Cold War IS over and the Soviet Union is no more.

companion book to The Promise Of Joy

To truly understand this book you must first read The Promise of Joy. You will be glad you did. Both books are exceptional and with the conflict ongoing in the Balkins today and our current American leadership - they are must reads.
