Come and See: Learning to Follow Jesus (GROW Devotional Series)

One of the great invitations of the Bible is when Jesus encouraged people to "Come and See!" This invitation was more than an offer to satisfy one's curiosity, but a bidding to experience who He was and to exercise one's faith to come and follow in His footsteps. Yet, this calling was not reserved just for the twelve men Jesus engaged to follow him some 2,000 years ago - it was an invitation to whosoever will. The invitation to follow Jesus is still being extended to people today. Yes, it looks a bit different today than 2,000 years ago, but it is no less exciting. Instead of hearing the words straight from the Master's mouth and watching firsthand the miracles He performed, we have to read and hear about it through the pages of Scripture. This is not always that easy or obvious. Too often, we mistakenly go to church or attend a Bible Study or conference as a mechanism for followship, but it is not. In fact, if we are not careful, our pursuit of following Jesus can become rote and organizational instead of relational and organic in nature. We must remember that Jesus did not step out of heaven and into humanity to give us religion (which church often offers); instead, He came to bring us into a personal relationship with Himself. In light of this danger, this journey you are about to embark on is intended to be different. This journey is intended to be much more personal, relational, and organic just like it was when Jesus walked with His disciples. So, instead of following a curriculum requiring the completion of a workbook or attending a class, we will be intentionally simplistic and relational. Instead of jumping around book to book or story by story, we are going to step into the shoes of the first disciples and follow in the footsteps of Jesus to inhale and view His life, ministry, and teachings as he lived them before His disciples. By chronologically reading through the Gospels and discussing His life and ministry, you are going to attempt to inject your life into His narrative. Your text will only be the Scriptures, and each day you are going to walk where Jesus walked, hear what Jesus said, and see what Jesus did - with the sole intention of witnessing and experiencing what the twelve disciples experienced. The objective is for Jesus to be your Rabbi - allowing Him to pour into you what He poured into the twelve. As you begin your journey through the life and ministry of Jesus, it would be extraordinarily helpful to partner up with two to five other people. This is called a GROW group. This GROW Group is intended to spur one another along, to glean from one another, and to encourage and learn from each other as God works among you. Each week, you will read the same passages, meditate over the same teachings, and then meet together to talk about what you have learned and experienced with Jesus. Enjoy!
