The series(1971-1990) starts with a fully formed character, Police Detective Columbo. In each episode, we get to see how, where, when, and why a person gets dispatched; this is usually because the person is a baddie or did not stay in the car.
Then we get to watch Columbo figure out who the dispatcher is and follow his clues to the conclusion. Most of the time, Columbo is helped along by the dispatcher(s) by over-explaining.
Each episode is stuffed with popular T.V./Movie actors, and some get to be reused as different characters in the series.
If we did not like the formula and the fun of kibitzing, this series would not have lasted so many years. Notice that Columbo’s Hair turns grey. When the series ended in 1990, it was followed by a series of Columbo movies; the movies follow the same formula.
Watch Peter Falk in full character in “Vibes” (1998), where a girl falls out of a window and goes missing. Peter Falk as Harry Buscafusco says, "Maybe she bounced, like, out of the hotel. Women are soft."
